HOW THE HUN WAS FOILED
A contemporary suggests that a new Russian explosive is an improved kind of Shimose powder, which the Japanese used with such deadly effect in the Russo-Japanese War.' For years the Germans made every attempt to.- discover the secret of this explosive. On one occasion some German naval officers were visiting a Japanese arsenal, and thev were all most anxious fo see the. Shimose powder. No objection was raised, and a sample was brought. out for their inspection. A German commander, when he. thought he was not observed, grabbed as much as he could conveniently hide in his hand, and in 24 hours or so a special messenger left by the first outgoing liner with the precious simple addressed to the Wilbelmstrasse. Some weeks later, when his squadron put into a European port, the commander received a despatch inquiring in the best official German ! what the blazes he meant hy trying to-pull the leg of the Wilhelmstrasse. authorities, as the sample of Shimose he bad sent by special messenger was composed of harmless materials coloured by a little mustard.
