STATE MEDICAL SERVICE.
PREVENTION’’ is belter than cure, is the underlying principle of Stall' medical service, as advocated by Dr Milson Rhodes, of England, a wellknown authority on (he subject. Dr Rhodes, who is at present on a visit to Wellington, in the course-of an interview, explained his proposals to nationalise doctors, on which the State Medical Service Board in < 1 real Britain was based. Dr Rhodes advocates that the medical profession be made a branch of the Civil Service, with salaries ranging from £4OO to £I,OOO per annum, every medical man to be placed on the service will) one Slate examination to lit him for that service. Every householder or lodger already in or coming into a neighbourhood should put his name on the list of the medical man of his choice, it being such medical man’s duly to call on and see sneh household, note where constitutional tendencies exist, and where medical or surgical assistance is needl'd. Tints his duly will he the prevention of disease and the maintenance of (he health of patients. Such medical man should he allowed only a certain number of families, say, 300 to 300. As soon as the number is made up for one doelor the neighbourhood must choose others. Dr Rhodes advocates that there be a central depot for instruments, books, serums, ere., and even cottage hospitals.
