DROPPING PROJECTILES FROM AEROPLANES.
A LOCAL INVENTION, A local resident has thought out a device for dropping bombs accurately from aircraft upon stationary or moving objects. Before prosecuting his ideas further ho wrote to the Minister of Defence, asking whether any such invention was in use in (hi l aerial service, and if not whether (hi 1 Minister would assist, him to tiring the matter before the Imperial authorities. The Minister has replied licit there is no such invention in use with the British AFrial Service, and it is considered that such a device is not practicable. 'The Aliuister added that be would have great pleasure in forwarding to the Secretary of (lie Board of Invention and Research, or to tin l Secretary War Office, London, detailed drawings and full specifications of the invention if the inventor will forward I hem.
In conversation with the inventor, we pointed out what we considered (lie obstacles in the way of accuracy in billing a target, at from, say, a. 6,001M‘1. altitude with a machine travelling at from 40 to 70 miles an hour, referring to vibration, occilalion, air currents, etc. 'file inventor held Hull he bad given all these points consideration, and considered that Hie instrument would make the dropping of projectiles from an aeroplane as accurate as gun lire from a cruiser in action at sea.
