A SPLENDID RECORD.

SIX SONS WHO ARE SERVING,

The record of being the parents of six sous who are either serving at the front or have served or are in training belongs to Major and Mrs J. Birnie, of Remuera, Auckland. One of their sons, Sergt. Robert, has just been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for conspicuous lira,very in Prance. Sergt. Birnie is 27 years of age, and was horn in Auckland. When the war broke out he left as a gunner with the Main Body, serving throughout the whole of the Gallipoli campaign. He was wounded twice, hut was never away from duty. On one occasion a high-ex-plosive shell burst over his gun, killed one of his companions, and slightly wounded him. Major Birnie is an old Volunteer officer of 27 years’ service. At present he is Chief of Staff of the National Reserve. Two other sons of Major Birnie, John and William, also left with the Artillery with the Main Body, and fought on Gallipoli, the latter being slightly wounded on one occasion. Arthur, another son, left for the front recently with the Mounted Rifles. Charles was a member of the Motor Transport Corps, and was invalided from Egypt and discharged, and George is a lieutenant, in the Post and Telegraph Rilles in Christchurch, and is going to the front shortly.
