HUNGARY AND THE WAR.
The Hungarians are no more anxious than the Germans to repent of their offences against the laws of nations and to secure peace upon terms which would prevent another war. They are only anxious to avoid the invasion of their country and to escape the sufferings which they have inflicted upon others. The Germans exhibited during the Russian invasion of East Prussia exactly the same characteristics, and will certainly not display a stoical determination to die for their Kaiser amid the ruins of their cities when the Allied armies cross the Rhine. In the northern spring of 1015, when the Russians seized the Carpathian passes and begun to fight their way down into the Hungarian plain, the Magyar Raiders
were so disturbed that fhey permitted German officers to take control of the Austro-Hungarian armies on the east front. They were quite satisfied with Germany as long as the war went well, as long as only Belgium, France, Poland, and Servia agonised. The change in their demeanour is therefore all the more indicative of the change in (he military situation. The Magyar element in Hungary, as the German element in Austria, rules the Latin and Slavonic' majority by military force and entrenched privileges. That a peace movement is being openly organised by responsible Hungarian leaders shows that the Magyars are coming to the conclusion that they have nothing to gain and much to lose by continuing the Avar.
