THE FORWARD TREND OF THE ALLIES’ CAUSE.
It has become the fashion to talk as if Germany lias luul all the best of the fighting, holds the best position, and continues to have the best of the bargain. Dr. Fitchett vigorously denies all three points in the July issue of ‘“Life," just published. Germany, he practically says, has the appearance of doing well; in reality she. is doing badly. The cause of the Allies is growing stronger, their prospects brighter with every month that slips by.
Because the French armies and the British armies do not fling themselves in masses niton the guns along the Western front immediately the first, day of spring is heralded, it does not follow that the great spring offensive of which we have heard so much has been abandoned.
The pessimist points to Russia besieged, lo Greece wobbling in the balance and inclining towards Germany, to Bulgaria aggressive, and to France weakened by the shocks at Verdun. But Dr. Fileheft points out to the pessimist that, fiercely as Germany may struggle, she makes no virtual progress; bitterly as she resents the blockade, she cannot break it; cunningly as she may seek to disrupt the Allies, she cannot sever their friendships. And now, he claims, the Allies are slowly, hut surely, emerging from Iho stale of independent lighting and “converging on a common centre,” to quote General Sherman’s definition of enlightened war. Altogether, “Lite” for July is a heartening as well as a picturesque number. There are many lino special articles in this issue dealing with various aspects of life apart from the war. If “Life” is unobtainable locally for l)d, it will be mailed to any address if a. postal note for 4s (id is sent to T. Shaw Filehett, 37(i Swans ton Street, Melbourne.
