in the Supreme Court at Wellington on Tuesday, the Registrar, Mr W. A. Hawkins, read the reserved judgment of his Honour Mr Justice Hosking in the case recently heard by way of originating summons, to determine the right of (In* i’ukekohe Borough Council to pay off its overdraft out of loan raised by the authority of a poll of the ratepayers; also, having paid off the overdraft, was the borough entitled to take advantage of the section of the Municipal Corporations Act which provides that the amount borrowed by way of overdraft shall not exceed the amount of income received from rates levied in any one year. The congregation of St. Patrick’s Church. Palmerston North, was addressed on Sunday night (reports the Standard) by Messrs Johnson and Walsh, of Wellington, who are representatives of the Diocesan Council. After thanking the Rev. Pat her M’Manus for his welcome on their arrival, the speakers urged the Catholics of Palmerston North to strongly support the federation in its endeavours to obtain the subsidising of Catholic schools by the State. As a means to this end, Catholics were urged to support the proportional representation movement, because Catholics comprised one-seventh of the population of the Dominion, and with a representation of that capacity it is considered that a fairer deal will be given to Catholic schools by the State. The enormous amount of money paid by Catholics towards the upkeep of State schools in the year 1915-1(1, with education costing 29s 3d per head, was emphasised. The work already accomplished by the federation, such as the suppression of immoral literature from public sale, and the* elimination of text books offensive to Catholics in State schools, etc., was also dwelt on by the speakers.
