FOXTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

SPECIAL MEETING.

A special meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held on Thursday evening to finally settle the balance-sheet and discuss inatteis in .connection with the ranging and lamplighting. There were present. The Mayor (Mr Alf Fraser), and Crs Henderson, Whibley, McColl, Stevenson, Simmons, Freeman, and Bryant. An apology was received from Cr Coley.

The annual balance-sheet, which ■was laid on the table at a previous meeting, duly audited and free from tans, was presented, taken as read, and finally settled. The Mayor stated that since the last meeting Mr S. Read had tendered his resignation as ranger, so that it was now necessary to free that position as well as that of lamplighter. In connection with the latter position, he thought the question of getting a youth to assist in the works, part of whose duty would be to. light and extinguish the lamps, was worthy consideration. The clocks at present in use on the lamps were no good and should be scrapped. Cr Whibley suggested amalgamating all the duties and paying a man a weekly wage to do the lot. This system had worked very satisfactorily previously. He understood the Inspector of Nuisances was leaving the district, and would be tendering his resignation, and this position could also be included. In connection with ranging, he suggested lhat it he an instruction to the new man to take legal proceedings against owners of straying stock in preference to impounding them. The Mayor: The stock can be impounded, and the owners prosecuted also. Ho moved that applications be invited for the positions of lamplighter, ranger, fire inspector, inspector of nuisances and dog registrar at a salary of £3 per week. Cr Stevenson seconded the motion. Ho considered that by paying a man a weekly wage the work would be done more satisfactorily. Crs Simmons, Bryant and Freeman favoured employing a youth to do the lamplighting and assist in the gas works. In reply to the Mayor, Cr McColl said he did not consider there was any necessity for a youth in the gas works. He was in favour of the motion. On being put the motion was carried, the voting being; For: The Mayor and Crs Whibley, Stevenson, Henderson and McColl. Against: Crs Simmons, Bryant and Freeman.
