WITH THE ANZACS.
RECEIVING NEWS OF THE NAVAL BATTLE.
(Special from New Zealand War (Correspondent.)
A notable incident showing the eagerness of the German authorities lo disseminate (he news of their alleged victory in the North Sea occurred on a section of the British front. Willi undue haste and before the actual facts were known, their soldiers in the firing' line displayed a small boarding above a parapet with the following notice ; “English defeat at sea. Seven cruisers sunk, one damaged, eleven oilier crafts sunk. Hip, Hip, Hurrah !"
This one-sided story was rather more than our men could stand, so they promptly put several bullets through the hoard. Our soldiers arc not supposed to reply to such bulletins, but next day, when (bey received the news of I Ik* real happening, I hey could not resist hoist - ing details, giving the actual losses on each side. Their communique ended with : “Hoch, hoch, hoch !” After a few minutes our hoard was taken down. The Germans, having apparently failed to grasp its (rue siguilieaiiee, hoisted another, inscribed ; “Once more would yon let us see lhe*message?” No notice being taken, the Germans again anxiously signalled : “We heg of you lo show again the table of Ihe Heel.” The eagerness facts (dearly indicated their suspicions (hat they bad been misled by their own authorities, and their disposition to place more reliance on (he estimate of the British Admiralty. The Australians made a successful raid on the German trenches after heavy bombardment by our gnus. With great dash they got I It rough (he German wire, scrambled into the trenches, and returned with several prisoners. Aleantime, Ihe German guns had come into action, and when being taken across No .Man’s Land to our trenches, (he prisoners, hearing their own shrapnel, lay down and screamed. The bombardment, while, it lasted, was very tierce. The New Zealand Artillery, which took part, made excellent shooting. The Germans shelled and bombed the New Zealand trenehes ineffectually. The Australian casualties were slight.
