THE NATIONAL REGISTER.

BOROUGH COUNCIL AND PATRIOTIC SOCIETY CONFER-

A conference of the Foxtoii Borough Council and Patriotic Society' was held in the Council Chamber last night for the purpose of taking combined action to complete the National Register. There were present: The Alayor (Alf. Iraser Esq.), and Crs. Henderson, McColl, Freeman, Thompson, Bryant, and Simmons, and Alessrs Rev. Raine, Kellow, AlcMnrray, Ilornhlow, AYm. Ross and Preston. The Alayor presided. Copies of the roll as forwarded by the Government were submitted to the meeting, and scrutinised. The Alayor explained that the object of the meeting was to decide upon a method that, would make the roll complete. The Council at its last: meeting passed a resolution to defray half-cost, of (lie expenses. Air Kellow, secretary of the Patriotic Society, outlined three methods of getting the work done, and one that found most favour was to employ paid canvassers. In reply to a question, the Alayor said the meeting was only concerned in completing the register so far as it applied to the borough. The Alanawatu County Council had attended to the out-districts. Mr Ross did not think the County canvasser had touched any of the mills. , The Alayor said that arrangements could he made for an exchange and comparison of the rolls, and any names which had been left out of the county roll could be added to it. It was suggested that (lie borough roll should include (lie Aloutoa district and the llaxmills. The county canvasser had visited the district when the mills were slack. A number of men had refused to till in the registration forms. Cr Henderson said action should he taken by the Government lo proceed against such men. An example should me made' of shirkers. Several were of opinion that the work of completing the roll should he undertaken by the police, who were hacked with authority. After further discussion, the Rev. Raine moved, and Cr Thompson seconded, that two canvassers lie employed to complete the National Register for Eoxtou borough, local returned soldiers if possible, and that their appointment be left in the hands of the Alayor and Alessrs Kellow and Ale .Murray’.—Carried. Air Kellow moved that the Borough Council and Patriotic Society each contribute up to £5 for the employment of canvassers. —Carried. Air Ilornhlow moved, and Mr AlcA[array seconded, that all district Ilaxmill proprietors he asked to submit n list of their employees to the local recruiting officer. —Carried. Rev. Raine and Cr Henderson moved that this meeting form itself into a local National Register Completion Committee. —Carried. Other matters were discussed and the meeting rose.
