GALLIPOLI.

(From the Outlook.) Oh, who of us can e’er forget Thy mime, Gallipoli ! • ’Tis branded deep upon our hearts, As long as life shall be. And though our eyes may never look Upon thy wave-boat strand. To thee our thoughts will ever turn, As to no other land. Our teats will flow, our hearts will glow, With mingled pain find pride, For those we gave, the true, the brave, Who for Freedom’s cause have died. Hard, hard, indeed, was the cruel need That our best beloved should go In their glad young days, and.untried ways, To meet the opposing toe. They gave their all at duty’s call ; What more than life could they give? They laid this down, and won Fame’s crown For deeds that will ever live. And they too live —their spirits live We trust, a. higher ‘life ; Where conflicts cease, and glorious peace Has followed mortal strife. Their bodies rest —some ’nealh ocean’s breast, Aid some on the wave-beat, shore. To the hind they left, find the friends bereft, They’ll return no more—no more. Hearts almost break for the loved one’s sake, But yield not to despair ; For though we weep, we know they sleep In the Heavenly Father’s care. Oh ! Sacred ground art thou to us ; As long as life shall be We never can forget thy name, Far off Gallipoli ! Foxton. R. DUNCAN.
