Mr Hore, who has been manager for Messrs Stiles and Matheson’s Foxton business for some time past, left to-day to take up a similar position in Mr Mansfield’s, Carterton, business. Air Wainright, of Masterton, is Mr llore’s successor.
News has been received in Wellington that Ala.jor Lionel Brough Stansell, fourth son of Air and Airs •1. R. Stansell, of Lyelf Bay, Wellington, and late of Foxton, died of wounds in France on the 41 h June. Major Sfcuisell left New Zealand in charge of the Fourth Battalion of Infantry. lie was well-known in the Ma nawatu district, where he was engaged in the railway service. He was for a time stationmaster at Ashhurst, and was also relieving station master in this district for some time. He was chief clerk at Timaru at the time of his enlistment for service abroad. He served in the Boer War as Quarter-master-Sergeant in the Seventh Contingent. Prior to enlistment he had charge of the railway engineers in the Timaru-Christchureh district, holding the rank of caplain. The late Ala.jor Stansell was born on the 21st June, 1880. at Timaru. He leaves a wife and several young children.
Mr Andrew Thomson, a very old and respected resident of Wanganui, died on Wednesday, at the age of eighty years. The deceased gentleman was a school teacher in the North Island from the early sixties. During the troublous time of the Maori War he was a teacher at W’airoa (Hawke's Bay), and at. Turakina. Later he went to reside in Wanganui, where he established an educational seminary, one of his pupils in those early days being Mr Justice Sim. Subsequently Mr Thomson Joined the service of the Wanganui Education Board, being headmaster of the Bulls School for a number of years. He retired from active leaching work in 1895, and resumed his residence in Wanganui, where he had lived ever since. He took a great interest in church work, being an elder of St. Paulks Presbyterian Church, Wanganui, and for an unbroken period of fiftythree years conducted a Sundayschool class in any town in which he happened to he located. Mr Thomson is survived by his widow and five sons and five daughters, the eldest son being Mr A. D. Thomson, Assistant Public Service Commissioner. The Rev. .1. M. Thomson, M.A., recently Presbyterian minister in this district, was also a son of deceased. A pleasant little function took place at the railway station last night, when the various branches of the service assembled to make a presentation to Mr I). Munro, in honour if his approaching wedding and to mark the esteem in which he is held, and to wish him and his bride-elect long life and happiness. Guard Crowe referred to the esteem in which Mr Munro was held by his fellow employees, and said the token he was to receive would serve to remind him of that fact, lie wished him and his future bride good luck. Inspector Slone said the function was a surprise to him, but he was glad to be present and to do honour to a young man who was a credit to the service. He wished him every happiness. Air Kellow (local manager for Alessrs Levin and Co.) spoke of the courtesy with which Mr Munro had always discharged his duties. He paid a tribute to the future Mrs Munro, and recommended the other young men present to follow Mr Alunro’s excellent example. Air Preston (N.Z Shipping Co.) endorsed the previous speaker's remarks, as did Alessrs Turkington, Perrett and Alethven. Air Daniell then handed Mr Alunro a handsome clock and tea, set, which was followed by three hearty cheers. Mr Alunro feelingly responded.
