Constable Fred. Hooker, of the Auckland police, is on a holiday visit to his parents in Foxton. “Fred.” is held in high esteem by his Auckland comrades, and is a credit jo the force.

At last night’s annual meeting of the local Horticultural Society, Mr P. G. -Jackson was elected president, and the retiring president, Mr G. 11. Stiles, was unanimously elected a life member.

Mayor Fraser is having a busy time at present. Apart from his private affairs and the time usually given to Mayoral duties, he is supervising the work in Ihe borough office until the new Town Clerk takes up his duties.

The death occurred at Koputaroa yesterday of Mrs Harrison, a native, well-known locally, who had been a resident in (his district, for many years. The deceased was between 35 and 40 years of age, and although she had not enjoyed the best of health Iter death was quite unexpected.

A cable has been received in Auckland stating that his Lordship Bishop Cleary, of Auckland, arrived safely in Rome on Friday on a visit ad limina lo his Holiness the Pope. Bishop Cleary, who is accompanied by Father Kehoe, goes from Rome to Great Britain and Ireland, and is due hack at the end of the veal’.

A farewell afternoon was tendered to Mrs G. 11. Stiles at the Methodist parsonage on Friday afternoon by the Methodist Ladies' Guild. A very pleasant afternoon was spent, and a presentation of a set of lish knives and forks was made to Mrs Stiles, who lias always been a faithful member. Mrs Walker in a few well-chosen remarks, expressed the appreciation of the Guild of Mi's Stiles' services, and their sorrow at her departure, and wished her health and happiness in her new home and sphere. Airs Stih’s feelingly responded, and thanked the ladies tor all their manifest kindness and good wishes.
