The Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, JUNE Ist, 1916. THE DRESS AND PATRIOTISM.

WE sometimes wonder whether the public realist' the tremendous amount of work the press throughout the Dominion has done, and is doin”', gratuitously and willingly on behalf of (he multifarious patriotic movements and what this work entails in labour, time and spaee ? We are afraid they don’t. The sueeess of all patriotic efforts in the main should be recognised as due to constant publicity which arouses loyal patriotism, sympathy and generosity of the public. Just imagine what would happen to all patriotic efforts if the press became silent ! Handsome donations have been made by wealthy individuals to the various deserving funds —some wealthy people there an*, and be it. said to their everlasting shame, who have not. given as freely as they could to those funds which make for the comfort and consolation of (hose who an* shedding their life’s blood to protect and maintain their freedom and wealth ; sacrilice, loyally to King and country, and self-denial, are writ large on (he gifts of those in humble circumstances, (living all their due for loyalty, labour, sacrilice and generosity, the press stands out second to none —and yet no commercial enterprise has been hit so hard as a consequence of the war. We make no complaint on this head, and are still prepared to make sacrillces equal with all others, but because (he press does not deliver its goods in bulk the public require to be reminded that the space in the news sheet is to the newspaper man what the stock-in-trade is to the tradesman, and press men have to live and move and have their being in common with every other mortal on this mundane sphere.
