PREHISTORIC SALONIKA.
WHAT BRITISH SOLDIERS UN-
EARTHED,
The following is an extract from a, letter written by an oflieer attached to the British Salonika Expeditionary Force, says the r l olograph : —You know, of course, that when troops are in a position they dig things we’ll call drains, in ease the Germans get hold of the letter, and don’t know our real name for them. One of our companies was busy digging drains, and came across a big roe.k. The man who found it hit it wild his pick in disgust, and to his surprise, the pick went through. That was how we found our first prehistoric grave. In it were some hones and some very ancient; pottery. Four or live others have been found since, and each one contains something — heads, gold ornaments, etc. To-day an “archaeologist” arrived, and I wont out with him. Ho wanted to fix a, date for the graves. We found four iron spearheads in one, and he savs lint dale is about 1200 B.C. . . The hones are in an
extraordinary state of repair ; in fact, I am sure the man suffered from rheumatoid arthritis ! His teeth are marvellous. Not one is missing, or shows any sign of decay! In the same grave were smaller hones, which must have been those of a child. They are all in stone coffins. All finds of value are going to the museum at Athens.
Apparently, a lot has been found in different parts. There is nothing known about Macedonia at the period represented, so, besides defending the country tor them, we are going to find out its history for the Greeks.
