THE HEMP INDUSTRY.

SHIPPING SPACE AVAILABLE FOR 27,000 BALES IN JUNE.

An assurance that something would be dune to assist the Ilax industry in the matter of shipping space was given by the Prime Minister (the Right Hon. W. E. Massey) in the House of Representatives yesterday. Mr Field (Otaki) asked when shipping would be available for hemp ; also whether, in the event of no other speedy relief being available, the Government would do as it had done with kauri gum, ami purchase the hemp from the millers and hold it till they could get it, away. Mr Massey said he had had a conference with the representatives of different shipping companies the prievous morning, and they were able to give him an assurance that, in addition to 7,000 bales of Ilax going to America next month, the shipping companies would lift 20,000 bales in June. That would go a long way towards relieving the congestion that existed. If, later on, it was found impossible to get the ilax away, he would be quite willing to recommend Cabinet to follow the same coui’se with Ilax as had been followed with kauri gum since the beginning of the war.
