T FIBRE is a sheirlnge of sugar, ami cmisiimi'i's have ditlicnlly in procuring' siij>plit*s ol her (lian in small (luanlitics. In Auckland last week, Ihe largest storekeepers could only supply sucar in 2lh. lots. Retailers cannot yet (he required supplies from merchants. There is, however, no increase* in price. The reason for the shortage is difficult to ascertain. Our representative paid a visit to the Colonial Suyar Company’s works at Auckland -last Thursday, and in conversation with the manager, we were informed that there was a ‘‘hold up" somewhere*, hut the Company was not. in any way to hlame, as no stocks wore held at the works. This fact we can vouch for. The* out pul up to (he present is upwards of two thousand lons in excess of the quantity turned out for the same period last year, and still there* is a shortage In answer to a query as to where (he sugar was going, the manager said : "We* are fullilliny orders for the south.” Whether certain merchants are holdiny for a rise* or not we* cannot say, hut (he fact remains that there is a hold-up, hut (he hope of a rise in price, under (he* circumstances, will not he; realised. Something should he elone by the* Company to eepmlise the elistrilmtion.
