MONEY IN PIGS.
According to the Melbourne Argus, a South Gippsland farmer who has made a close study of pig fattening recently remarked (hat “at the ruling rates for pork every bushel of maize grown and fed to pigs returns 10s. Last winter an interesting experiment to determine the prolils possible from fattening was carried out by the Gippsland Co-operative Bacon Curing Cornpuny, at its Dandenong factory. Two sows in forward condition were purchased at auction in the local market on August 3 Ist. They were kept for a fortnight and fed solely on maize, which cost (Is per bushel, and pollard, purchased at 2s 5d per bushel. When bought, they weighed 3481 b. Had they been killed there and then, the dressed weight, allowing 25 per cent, difference between it and the live weight, would have been 2(illb. When they were slaughtered on September 15th they yielded 28(Jib of pork. They therefore gained 251 bin 14 days. The balance-sheet worked out as follows ; To cost of pigs, £0 10s ; cost of food, Os 4d ;£0 10s 4d. By 28(ilb pork at 10 Ml per lb, £l2 10s 3d. Net profit, £2 10s lid.
