MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING
The -monthly meeting of the Mauawatu County Council was held at Sanson on Tuesday. Present: Crs Sir Jas. Wilson (chairman), H. G. Hammond, H. H- Hunt, W. E Barber, B. Gray, W. J. Phillips and Strode Penny, The Hospital Board forwarded statement of levies i rr the year. The Manawatu Con: . i > -aid be required to pay ,£874 16s 4d, against ,£603 8s 4d last year. The Chairman explained several improvements which were pro posed to be made at the hospital during the year. The tramway manager reported that owing to the stoppage caused through a break-down of the engine the receipts only amounted to ,£lO7 18s, and as rails and fastenings purchased from May Morn Estates amounting to ,£329 15s 4d have to be paid for, a debit balance of ,£373 6s Id is shown. The locomotive “Mauawatu” was laid up at Foxton for repairs to boiler on sth nit., and did not run again until 22nd ult. It was thought at first that only a few new tubes required to be put in, but after the work was started it was found that the tubes and stay tubes were in such bad order that there was no option but to retube and restay the boiler. Several difficulties were met with to delay the work, but every effort was made to complete as soon as possible. The engineer reported that the strapping of the Whirokino Bridge had been completed and tension rods in some of the truss spans had also been straightened.
