SCHOOL PICNIC.

On Saturday, at the invitation of Mrs C.' F. Johnston, about three hundred children participated in a picnic and sports gathering at Victoria Park. Much careful preparation had been made by the hostess and a number of helpers; a large marquee had been erected and a plentiful supply of refreshments provided. At 11.30 an attack was made upon the eatables and a rapid transfer of the latter effected. Then, after a short interval, races were organised, the prizes for which had been provided by Mrs Johnston. Rounders, skipping, and tugs of-war were also indulged in and at, half past two another raid was made upon the provisions. These stood the shock gallantly and although enormous inroads were made, proved superior in cubic content to the capacity of E. • o ith of Foxton. During Luc an invitation was extended to the children by Mr Hamer to attend a free matinee and practically all availed themselves of the generous offer. Before marching the children to the pictures, Mr Gabites, in the unavoidable absence of the head-master, thanked Mrs Johnston on behalf of the children, and the boys and girls showed their appreciation by giving three hearty cheers for the hostess and those ladies and gentlemen who assisted to make the picnic such a success.
