FIRE AT HIMATANGI.
MR. O .BARBER’S RESIDENCE
DESTROYED
At about half-past ton last night the residence of Mr Otho Barber, near the Himatangi railway station, was totally destroyed by fire. The cause of the outbreak is not known, but it is, surmised that a. candle in the bedroom was left burning, and by some means ignited the curtains or wall paper. When discovered, the tire had a big hold on the walls and ceiling of the bedroom, and Mr and Mrs Barber were only able to get out in jmictically their night attire alone. Their nine-year-old daughter was sleeping in an adjoining room, and in getting her out Mr Barber was overcome by the. smoke and flumes, and but for the timely arrival of Mr Pearson, a neighbour, a fatal tragedy may have resulted. As it was Mr Barber was rather severe!v scorched about the head.
The fire spread very quickly, and it was found impossible to save any of the furniture and effects. The dwelling contained seven rooms, and was insured for £3OO in the North British Office, and the furniture was insured for £l5O in the same office.
