THE HEMP INDUSTRY.
POSITION UNCHANGED. There is no alteration in the position confronting the hemp industry, caused by the shortage of shipping space and it is now certain that the majority of the mills in the district will close for at least a month. The price of hemp is at the highest point reached in the history of the industry, but unfortunately millers cannot take advantage of same on account of being unable to get the product on the English market through shortage of tonnage. No doubt this ditliculty has been responsible in some degree for the very high prices quoted. Several mills have already ceased stripping and others will stop at the end of the current month. It is uncertain at present how long a stoppage will be necessary but it is hoped, that one month will sutliciently relieve the position. Most of the local mills will cease cutting on Saturday next and stripping at these mills will be finished next week. In view of the probability of re-opening within a month they will not scutch up. In some cases satisfactory arrangements have been made to continue milling but the majority will close down temporarily.
