The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, April 25, 1916. THE TOWN CLERKSHIP.

The Borough Council has appointed Mr R. H. Irwin, of Remuera, Auckland, Town Clerk, out 0f44 applicants for the position. According to testimonials and the successful applicant’s previous experience, the appointment should meet with general endorsement. We wish our new Town Clerk a successful term of office. The position, is a difficult one to fill —the clerk is the buffer and and medium between the Council and ratepayers. He is compelled to listen to grievances real and imaginary, and the criticism of councillors. If he is indiscreet enough to take sides or commit himself, the fat is soon in the fire. We do not anticipate any trouble in this connection, however, as the new officer Is too experienced in local government affairs to wander outside his well-defined admistrative limits. Councillors encomiums of the late Town Clerk is a gracious tribute to his services. We are surprised, however, that no mention was made by the Councillors of the faithful services of the assistant. ' Probably it was an oversight. The new officer takes up his duties at a fitting time, and will find everything in good working order.
