CORRESPONDENCE.
Sir. —I read in your paper recently" something about every penny of the rates being collected and the borough balance-sheet being ruled off ready for auditor before 5 p.m. of the 31st March. Is there anything very wonderful in this connection, sir, when one takes into consideration the price we pay for the work, over It seems to me, sir, that too great a proportion of our rates are expended on the office staff and Main Street. I can name several streets where property - owners have paid rates for years amounting to hundreds of pounds and have not got a penny expended to improve the thoroughfares. Is this a fair deal ? I think, sir, it would be fairer to split the borough up in wards and let each ward pay its share for office work and have the balance of the rates it pays expended in its own district. For years we have been paying rates and getting nothing in return and on top of this, sir, up goes the valuation. Wake up Mr Mayor and Councillors and give us back-blockers a fair deal. Yours etc., Back Street.
