The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, March 25, 1916. PALMERSTON HIT UP.

Palmerston got a rude awakening the other day as the result of an official visit from Dr. Smith of the .Health Department, whose report was read at a recent meeting ot the Borough Council. It appears from the report that Palmerston is behind the times in matters of hygeine. It is alleged its public men have been indulging too much in the Patriotic limelight, to the neglect of those vital essentials of civic administration which make for the health of the community. We are not indulging in criticism, but- glean these facts from the columns of our esteemed Palmerston contemporaries. If we attempted to criti-. cise the civic affairs of our “ big brother,” he would call upon us to remove the four-by-two irom our own eye before attempting to remove the speck from his optic, but all the same it must be humiliating to the dignity of Palmerston’s irrepressible public men whose civic ideals are ot such a high standard, to be told to put their house in order. Our Palmerston morning contemporary in dealing with Dr. Smith’s recent report says : “ Outsiders may, and probably will, gather from Dr. Smith’s remarks that Palmerston North is a pretty sickly locality. As a matter of fact, it is reputedly the most robustly healthy town in New Zealand. That is probably not due so much to the assiduity of our civic authorities as to the hardihood of the inhabitants. Still, there will be no harm in Saving a general clean-up, if Mayor Nash and his special committee can spare time from their multifarious patriotic duties to attend to the matter.”
