THE SHACKLETON EXPEDITION.
WHALER BRINGS HIS DIARY. Buenos Aykes, March 23. The Endurance is expected daily, A whaler has brought Sir Ernest Shackleton's diary of the voyage to South Georgia. The whalers there said they had ice all the seasou and the pack was unbroken. Sbackletou abandoned the idea of crossing the continent that year and decided to winter at Weddell Sea in the hope of reaching 77.30 degrees south before being frozen in. The diary says a stowaway was discovered in the tank locker. He said it was his only chance of joining the expedition, and he was made cook’s help. Shackleton’s Pole party was probably himself, Marston, Wild, Hurley and Macklin. The men were in splendid health. He expects the cinema polar journey would be difficult to realise. South Georgia’s population is 2000 in the summer. The homes of the station managers are replete.with every comfort. Electric light is everywhere. The island was most valuable to the expedition because the dogs could be exercised and fed on fresh meat. Mr Hurley has a good camera and many feet of film to enable moving pictures to be taken for the first time on a polar journey.
