SAD DROWNING FATALITY.
A nun, Sister Leonora, from the Taumaranui Convent, was drowned iu the Wanganui River, near Manunui, on Monday afternoon. The day was St. Joseph’s Day, and the jubilee of the foundation of the Order to which these nuns belong. They celebrated it by a picnic at Manunui. Sister Leonora stepped into a small boat moored by the bank, and pulled out into the stream. Here she lost an oar, and got into difficulties. Father Forde went to her rescue, and wading into the water up to his neck, pushed the boat nearly to shore. Before reaching it, however, the current swung the boat round, capsized it, and carried Bather Forde off his feet.- He had the greatest difficulty in scrambling along the bottom, and got to land exhausted. The unfortunate occupant of the boat was c\.. ■.. down about 300 yards. She rose twice, and was observed to look up, but did not utter a sound. She was taken out of the water within 10 minutes, but all efforts to restore her proved fruitless. Sister Leonora was the filth daughter ot Mr J. j. Clements, of Belmont Terrace, Remuera. She was 22 years of age.
