FOXTON PATRIOTIC SOCIETY.
A meeting of the executive of the Patriotic Society was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday evening. The President (Mr A. Fraser) was in the chair. The Secretary reported balance in hand ,£527 9s rod, and it was decided to deposit in the post office savings bank. The matter of badges for members of the Society was discussed, and a resolution carried, to make arrangements with Messrs E. Platt Ruskin and Co., Sydney, for a supply.
The amount received to date for the Patriotic Shop is £gi 12s gd.
The first collection from the patriotic boxes realised 4s sd. received as follows, the names of the collectors for the various dis tricts being in parenthesis : Lady’s Mile, Beach road, etc., (Mesdames James Robinson and John Robinson) £lO 13s yd ; Main and Park Streets (Mesdames A. Ross and Hawke), £j 8s 3d,; Robinson Street and Norbilon Road (Mrs Greig and Miss J. Ross), ns gd; Coley, Putter and Hillary Streets (Mrs Podmore), £3 17s gd ; Ravensworth, Duncan and Watson Streets (Misses Edwards and B, Fraser), 9 s 2d; The Avenue (Mrs Harvey), £3 4s; Johnston, Russell and Thynne Streets (Misses B. Speirs and Price), £2 15s yd; Upper Avenue, Howan and Baker Streets (Mrs Chas. Robinson and Miss Robinson), £1 193 5d ; Purcell, Frances and Reeve Streets (Misses C. Lumsden and E. King), £1 5s 8d ; Union Street (Misses Lumsden and King), £1 4s Sd ; Whirokino Road (Mrs Kellow), £1 2s id; No. 1 and No. 2 Lines (Mesdames Moore and Hamer), 19s 2d; Cook, Whyte, Whittaker and Hall Streets (Misses Berthold and Lenihan), 13s 2d. With reference to a case of local distress, it was decided that as all the funds in hand were subscribed specially for the Wounded Soldiers Fund, that no action could be taken, but to deal with this and any other cases arising from circumstances in connection with the war, the following resolution was , carried : “That the funds of the Patriotic Society are for the purpose of assisting wounded soldiers and their dependents, but as cases of necessity are arising through soldiers leaving their dependents inadequately provided for, that a special fund be opened to meet such cases, and the public be asked to help.” This will allow the Society to lend a helping hand when required, and the following subscriptions have been promised : —Mrs Greig £5, Mr Wra. Ross £2 2s, Mr A. Fraser £l. The matter of celebrating Anzac Day was left in abeyance until such time as the Government decided what day would be declared a general holiday. The matter* of the Recruiting Scheme put forward by the Government was fully discussed and it was the general opinion that as tar as the Foxton district was concerned that a recruiting campaign was foredoomed to failure. A resolution that the executive form itself into a recruiting committee and endeavour to carry out the scheme of the Government was lost.
It wad decided to arrange a public welcome to all returned soldiers as soon as details could be completed.
