PROSPEROUS NEW ZEALAND.

PAPAL DELEGATE’S VIEW. On his return to Sydney after an extended tour of New Zealand, Archbishop Cerretti, the Papal Delegate, spoke with enthusiasm of the hospitality extended to him in the Dominion, “During my stay,” he said, “I had ample opportunity of meeting the leading men in civil and political life. In all the leading cities receptions were arranged, and I was struck by the amity and good fellowship which exist among all sections of the community. The Catholic community has done wonderful work there, and it has been splendidly assisted in its labours by its non-Catholic fellow citizens., Their churches, charitable organisations, and schools are monuments to their zeal and religious enthusiasm. “The people display wonderful initiative, and the progress made by such a small community is most striking. I was told by leading public men that there is now more money in the country than there was before the war broke out. From the point of view of trade, the great world’s struggle now proceeding has had no effect ; indeed, in some directions the trade with the overseas markets has benefited. “The departure of so many young men, however, is having a marked effect on some industries. In some centres I was told that butter lactories have had to close down because labour is not available. The loss of the young men is a great blow to- these young communities, and in this direction the war will be felt very seriously in young countries like New Zealand and Australia. “I. was delighted with everything in New Zealand, and look back on my visit with extreme pleasure.”
