SCHRAMM V. M'NAB.

ALLEGED SLANDER. THE CASE WITHDRAWN. Hamilton, March 14. The case in which Frederick William Schramm, Clerk of the Court at Te Kuiti and Registrar of Electors at Taumarunul, is suing the Hon. Dr McNab for £I,OOO for alleged slander, opened before Mr Justice Cooper to day. The cross-examination of the plaintiff by Sir John Findlay had just commenced, when an adjournment was made for the parties to confer. When they returned to Court, counsel for defendant intimated that the facts had been discussed, and Dr M'Nab had given plaintiff his personal assurance that he did not use the words alleged, or any other words intended to reflect on plaintiff. It was admitted that plaintiff had always borne, and does bear, a reputation for honesty and earnest devotion to duty. Counsel added that plaintiff was two years under him during the time he (Sir John) was Minister of Justice, a portion of which he was in the Wellington office. He (counsel) could testify to his capabilities. Counsel also desired to say that in view of the inlormation given him, plaintiff took proceedings in all bona tides, and, further, that it was their belief that witnesses who bad attended the meetings in Hangatiki, and were being called lor plaintiff, had honestly carried away a wrong impression, Plaintiff, counsel added, had lairly, properly, and courageously decided to withdraw from the case, and defendant was asking no costs. Mr Justice Cooper, in complimenting the parties on their amicable decision, said that both had acted as a pair of honourable men. He also added, as one of the Judges who was concerned in the Taumarunui election petition, that there was not one word of imputation of misconduct on the part of Mr Schramm.
