THE MATATUA.

NOT AN ENEMY ACT. CARBIDE EXPLOSION. Yesterday, in answer to a cabled enquiry, the Prime Minister (the Right Hon. W. E. Massey) received the following cable message from the Canadian Prime Minister : Ottawa, 14th March, 1916. —Marine Department does not believe that the Matatua disaster was occasioned by enemy act. Explosion probably due to gas formed by water coming into contact with carbide, which composed part vessel’s cargo.—(Signed) Borden. This cable will serve to set at rest apprehensions regarding the enterprise of the German submarines, to which the first report of the disaster gave rise.
