DROWNING FATALITY AT PAIAKA.
MANAWATU CLAIMS AN> OTHER VICTIM.
On Sunday afternoon, between half-past two and three o’clock, Ronald Broughton, son of Mr J. Broughton, of Levin, was drowned while bathing in the Mauawatu river at Paiaka. Deceased was a strong swimmer, bu*t was seized with cramp when about ten yards from the bank. He called out to some lads near by •to bring the boat, but he sank almost immediately, and some adults who were a little further off arrived too late to be of any assistance. The body was recovered three hours later by Mr Douglas Gardiner, of Paiaka, with the aid of a grappling iron. Deceased was nineteen years of age, well-known in the Levin district, especially in tootball circles, and was much respected. It is understood that he enlisted for service at the front, tfe was employed flaxculting at Higginson’s mill at the time of his death.
An inquest was held at the Levin Courthouse yesterday by Mr Fraser, coroner of Foxton, in the absence of Mr W. C. Nation, when a verdict was returned that deceased was accidentally drowned as above stated.
