CORRESPONDENCE.
(To the Editor)
Sir. — I wish to point out an important matter which “Growler” evidently overlooked in his complaints. It is the need of cleanliness. At the present moment it becomes every householder, not to complain about the big drain in Johnston street, but to keep the little drain at his back door clean. Sir, I could take you in a few minutes to houses where on the top of the water tanks is a collection of old rags and empty bottles. At many back doors there stands a kerosene tin into which Is shot the slops, and allowed to stand for three or four days before being thrown away. Fowls are seen running in and out ot the kitchen. This is disgraceful, and can we wonder it disease breaks out in our midst ? Indeed, the wonder is there is so little. Another mistake which is noticeable in many places otherwise clean is that the water closets are absolutely without ventilation, the door is kept closed and the lid left open. The correct thing is to be sure and close the lid, and if there is no other ventilation, leave the door partly open. Someone will say this is the inspector’s business, but it also becomes everyone’s business at the present time. A sprinkle of disinfectant on a rubbish heap is useless, remove the rubbish, Let everyone keep clean and we have little to fear. —I am, etc.,
