PARLIAMENTARY MEMENTO.

ORIGINAL SPEAKER’S CHAIR. An interesting memento of the first Parliament of New Zealand has been discovered in the old Parliamentary Buildings, now used for the purposes of the Auckland University College, in the shape of the original Speaker’s chair, which was found to be in use in the room of one of the professors. It is identified by the fact that there are two holes at the top of its frame, which obviously supported the crown that surmounted the chair. Sir Maurice Q’Rorke has satisfied himself that it was really the chair which was occupied by his predecessors in the presidency of the House of Representatives, and which he himself also filled for fourteen years as Speaker of the Auckland Provincial Council, that body also meeting -in the Parliament Buildings when Parliament itself was in recess. As the Old Colonists’ Association desires to obtain such historic relics to place in the proposed old colonists’ museum, the University College Council decided last week, on Mr Leys’ motion, to hand over the chair to the association as a contribution to the museum.
