THE WAR.
TERRIFIC BATTLE AT
VERDUN
What is described as the most terrific battle of modern times still rages at Verdun. The Germans succeeded in capturing the armoured fortress of Douaumont. on the Verdun main line of permanent fortifications, but it was recaptured by the French. Although the Germans have gained some ground, their losses have been enormous. The French, who have brought up many reinforcements are sanguine. London papers are of the opinion that the colossal German onslaught indicates that Germany seeks a solution at any cost before the Allies’ strength becomes too great. [The French fortress of Verdun, on the River Meuse, is 140 miles east of Paris. The German attack is being directed from the north, on the east side of the Meuse, and, according to the latest news, the enemy is on a line which traverses the map northwards of Fort de Douaumont. This fort was captured by the Germans on Saturday, and subsequently retaken by the French.]
