THE SUBMARINE

Up to 1905 Germany bad not a single submarine. The first German vessel was launched on August 30th, 1905 ; even then it

was considered an experiment; only in February, 1907, was it added to the register of the fleet. On the threshold of the twentieth century—on January Ist, 1901 — there were only four nations that either possessed submarines or were engaged in , their construction. At the head of the list stood France, with 14, of which only six were completed; next came the United States, with eight; then Britain, with six, of which not one was completed; .and, finally, Italy with two. On January Ist, 1914, the total number of submarines, whether completed or under construction, of all nations was approximately 400. It is needless to say that, after the outbreak of the present war, the role of the submarine came rapidly to the front. Great efforts are b»ing made to complete, with the utmost despatch, the submarines already begun, and to lay the keels of new vessels of improved design.
