AN HONOURABLE MAN.
An honourable incident is mentioned in connectian with the career of Mr J. W, Foote, late of London Street, Pousonby, whose death was announced recently. Some 40 years ago Mr Foote was in business at New Plymouth as a draper. In 1883, he had the mis fortune to find himself unable to meet his debts, and consequently filed his petition in bankruptcy. Unlike most people who experience that crisis, however, Mr Foote was not content to wipe the slate clean, and leave to his creditors only the remnant of his assets. On the contrary, he applied himself to the task of seeing that nobody but himself should suffer from his failure. The result of his efforts was that in 1897 each of his creditors in the bankrupt estate had the satisfaction of receiving from Mr Foote the difference between the dividend that bad been paid by the official assignee and 20s in the £. The amount thus distributed amounted to several hundred pounds.
