PALMERSTON AND RAIL WAY MATTERS.
Thk Palmerston Chamber of Commerce, at its last meeting, discussed the railway matters to come before the Royal Commission, in committee. The Chamber does not intend to disclose its policy of opposition to the linking up of the Main Trunk line between Marton and Levin,, but is working up a case and is endeavouring to pull in centres in the Hawke’s Bay and upper eastern Wellington districts to prove to the Commission what a grave injustice would be done if the State’s interest were made paramount. Well, we shall know in good time what the strength of the opposition is and if the West Coast and centres along the Main Trunk line cannot successfully dispose of it before the Commission, then we shall be greatly surprised. By the way, a conference of delegates representing local bodies between Levin and north of Taihape and Taranaki is being held at Marton today to draw up evidence to be submitted to the Commission in favour of railway development.
