The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, February I, 1916. TREATMENT OF THE RETURNED WOUNDED.
Things appear a bit mixed concerning the administration and supervision of affairs concerning returned soldiers, and complaints are appearing on behalf of the returned men in the press throughout the country. If such complaints have any foundation in fact then those responsible should lose no time in putting matters on a more satisfactory basis, and thus prevent magnified complaints developing into a public scandal. The Mayor of Auckland has raised a vigorous protest against the parsimonious spirit in which the claims of the returned men have been met. What is the use of raising huge sums of money for the relief of the returned wounded if the men are not to receive immediate benefit from such funds ? The Government and Patriotic Societies should take united action in giving immediate attention to returned men, but both are hanging back, with the result that the men feel that they are being neglected. There’s a screw loose somewhere, and it’s time Messrs Herdman, Russell and Allen settled upon a clear and definite course before the conference meets in Wellington. It would appear that there are too many fingers in the returned soldiers’ pie.
