TEETH OF SCHOOL CHILDREN.

At the Wellington Education Board meeting this week, in the course of a report on a big city school, the Dental Association said that 836 children had been examined. The examiners found two perfect sets of teeth ; requiring no treatment, 27; previous treatment, 107; every tooth decayed, 3 cases ; no teeth, 2 cases ; total extractions required, 2,546 ; total fillings required, 2,652. In the ensuing discussion, Sir Walter Buchanan said he thought the medical faculty should by this time have come to a conclusion as to what was the reason for such a disastrous state of affairs. It was decided to ask the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board to set up a committee to confer with the Education Board on the subject. The state of the children’s teeth as disclosed in the above is not singular. If parents cannot afford to have their children’s teeth attended to, the State should take the matter up and protect the health of the children by compulsory free treatment. Inspection of the teeth without treatment is a waste of time.
