WELLINGTON’S WATER SUPPLY.
A SERIOUS BREAKDOWN. WELLINGTON, Jan. 20. For uvn days the greater part ot Wellington has been without its water supply, only such sections about the centre ot the city as arc connected wicn the Karori reservoir being free from the disabilities attending_this form of “dryness.” The big Wainui dams are full and tli o city engineer estimates that 2o(),()()(,) gallons every hour, _or seven million gallons daily arc entering the mains, yet none reaches Wellington. Somewhere along the fourteen miles of pipe-lino there must he an enormous leak, yet so tar no trace has been discoverable though the engineer s staff arc making diligent investigation. This extraordinary disappearance has been veiled completely in mystery. Alcantime the plight of many people is becoming serious . Water-carts and tramway sprinklers are being used to supply and other parts with water lor domestic purposes, hot with the possibility of an imlelinite continuance of the shortage the outlook is had, tor industrial as well as tor household consumers.
