THE ONE MAN GAS WORKS.
(To the Editor). Sir.— Will you please allow me space in your columns to air my views in regard to the hoxton gas works. Some time last year our local gas works manager canvassed several householders with the object of obtaining consumers to partake of a certain amount of gas in the matter of lighting and for cooking purposes. I, amongst others, ordered a quantity of gas to flow through my premises and bad the pipes laid to the back door. Then came a full stop. Some time later along came something else that is connected with gas, namely, the meter. Whether there isn’t enough gas to supply our orders yet, or the Christmas festivities took too much to boil the pudding, I do not know. But it is about six weeks now since the connections were laid, and we are still burning 6d worth of kerosene. Does the gas works want to pay or does the borough want them to pay ? Anyhow, what gas we haven’t used up till now we sha’nt have to pay for, but the works does’nt get that benefit does it ? I would suggest that as the gas company are canvassing for consumers and are getting prospective users from time to time, that the services of a gasfitter be obtained permanently. As far as I can see the local plumber (casual man) has very little time to spare to the gas works. Its a poor concern that cannot run a permanent fitter and its a slow idea to get people to decide to have the gas laid on when things can be only done in drips and drabs. Six weeks is a long time to do a job that should only take at least a day. The gas manager does his whack and the man that makes the gas does his whack of work, so where’s the plumber. Trusting that the people who run the gas works will be a pound wise and a penny foolish instead of the other way about.—l am, etc., No Gas,
