The District Hospital Board meets to day. The Moutoa Dadies Patriotic Guild desire to acknowledge the sum of £4. from the Shannon Dramatic Society, Mr W. Petrie left for Wellington to-day, and will take up his position as hemp grader there immediately. The Queen of the South sailed at half-past two yesterday afternoon with a cargo of hemp for Wellington, She is due back again on Saturday morning, ' Mr Galland, headteacher of the Moutoa School, presented five candidates for the proficiency examination all of whom were successful. Well done, Moutoa ! Mr Reg. Barber, eldest son of Mr and Mrs W. K. Barber, left to join the 12th Reinforcements Mounteds, at Tauherenikau, on Tuesday.

Mr and Mrs A. H. Boyes left Foxton yesterday for Otaki, where they will remain tor a time until Mr Boyes receives his military appointment. On the ist January, 19x3, Mr Ed. Walker put a note in a bottle and cast it adrift at the Heads On New Year's Day this year the bottle and message was picked up by a young lady at Island Bay. It is stated that Gang Awa, a winner at Marton, has been sold by Mr J. Bull to Mr F. S. Easton for 500 guineas. The stock of silverware kept by Mr Golder provides as fine assortment as is to be found in any provincial town. Mr W. H. Ferris, chief hemp grader, is at present in Foxton, and is doing the grading at the local sheds until Mr Petrie’s successor, Mr J. Stewart, arrives In Foxton. Mr Stewart will take

up his duties early next week. There was a record Wednesday attendance at Fuller’s Pictures last night to witness the initial screening of the new serial picture, “The Million Dollar Mystery,” and there is little doubt that the popularity of this remarkable production is assured. The musical accompaniment by Miss White lent additional charm to a magni-

hcent programme, which will be repeated to-night. We received by the last English mail a post card from Mr Garnet G. Bell, dated from the hospital Magherafelt, Ireland, on November 9th. Mr Bell states that he is on the road to convalescence after an attack ot enteric fever and hopes to be sufficiently well to go back to England and join a boat there for New Zealand in two 01

or three weeks time. Mr Bell sends greetings to Foxton friends. Mr Hughie McDonald, an ex-em-ployee of Whitaunui, who is about to leave with the Ambulance Corps for the front, was recently entertained by his fellow employees at a smoke concert. The programme was contributed to by all hands. Mr T. Brock, an old soldier, occupied the chair and in an appropriate speech said that if “Hughie” acted only half as well in the King’s uniform as he did out of it the employees of Whitaunui would not have any reason to be ashamed of the man who was going that night to represent them. On behalf of the employees he presented Mr McDonald with a wristlet watch,Moutoa correspondent. j

On Tuesday night Rifleman Henry Walden, of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade reinforcements, who leaves New Zealand with the next contingent, was tendered a farewell social by the local Oddfellows Lodge, of which he is a member. There was a good attendance of members and a very enjoyable time was spent, songs etc., being contributed by a number of the brethern.

Oa Monday night at the residence of Mr and Mrs M. O’Reilly, a farewell social was tendered Messrs J. O’Reilly, J. Morgan and J. Healey, who left for camp on Tuesday morning. During the evening a number of songs were contributed, the accompaniments being played by Miss Walls, and after supper dancing was indulged in until the early hours of the morning. The health of the guests was proposed by Mr S. Smith, who wished them good health and a safe return. The gathering was brought to a close by the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”
