CORRESPONDENCE.
(To the Editor.) Sir. — In reference to the recruits that have leit here during the past six months, and also those hat have returned home from the hrout, I think that s great im piovement could he made locally as lar as send oils to those that go uud -.eiCoiuc homes to those who oa.e jack. It seems to me to be . very ridiculous way ot encouraging rr.otuu.tng to in. rch o>ie lot cl rent nit? uown to tire slatior a: up -.1. c. V the -Otvr. ; on •■ ■:!;>> at J. uurtnr. Ge camp. we.'k f-r so c .c,tb L : in* oi recruits iii-jiia io iu- i . cIUG ail the scud off lucy get is a few relations at the Iraiu to say good-bye. Of course, I don’t mean to say that they don’t -Vcerve a send-off, but if one i... recruits are good enough to be tendered a hearty farewell at the railway station, then they all are entitled to the same, as they are all practically speaking, going to the same place, and for the same good purpose. A few weeks ago W. Me Alister returned from the front, and received a real good reception ; the band plajmd in the street that night, and so iorth, and taking everything into consideration he was tendered a real good welcome home —but, of course, that’s just only what should be expected. Some time elapsed before word came that W. Howe was returning home to Foxton, and, of course, it was expected that, considering he had come from the same place and was also disabled, as was W. McAlister, that the same thing would happen that night. However, all that happened was that a few extra people gathered at the station at train time. If this is the New Zealand style of encouraging recruiting, then it’s no wonder we can see compulsory service gradually soaring down upon us. Trusting that I’m not trespassing too much ou your valuable space, and hoping that this distinction with local recruits will be abandoned, for we must remember that all the boys ate going to the same place or for the same purpose, and also that some abler pen than mine will clear the matter up,—l am, etc., F Longney.
