Writing to his uncle (Mr Hornblow ofFoxtoa) froq, Alexandria, under date October, 28th. Drive' W. Hornblow. of the artillery section of the Main Expeditionary Force, reports that he is safe and sound at the rest camp. He stales, “I do not think we will g f -l back to the Dardanelles. This is not a bad place. It is a bit warm at times, but we are just about seasoned to it now— and at present are not overworked lam meeting here, nearly every day, old friends and mates, who have come over in subsequent drafts, and I have had some great surprises. .... I am sorry I cannot mention things regarding the Dardanelles, etc., as all military subjects are barred in correspondence.” He refers tobismeetingwith relatives prior to sadder hap openings, and continues, “ since starting this letter we have again shifted, and are now back in Cairo —and are none too pleased, as we saw enough of this place months agor We have a number oh our chaps going back to the Dardanelles and I hope I am one of the lucky ones. We are short otmen at present and have now got a few niggers to help ns with the ho rsesK .•. . . I don’t think any of us will be sorry when the war Is finished as we are about full up of this country. . . . The Maoris are well in it and they are doing well. I was speaning to one of the wounded Maoris and he told me they enjoyed the bayonet charges best of all. The training here is very'solid, trench digging, bayonet charges, bomb throwing from trench to trench. The men get great tun out o; it. Bit it’s not easy work in the desert. It looks as it we are going to spend another Christmas in Egypt, but trust the next will be in good old New Zealand. We expect the seventh contingent here on the 21st November. . . . The only request made in the letter was for‘dark Havelock tobacco !’ ”
