The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, December 28, 1915. NOTES AND COMMENTS.
“The local money market continues amply supplied with funds for all general purposes (says the Trade Review). During the current quarter there has been the usual demands for assistance in gathering and moving the season’s produce, but after the splendid season just closed we should gather that the farming community are in a distinctly better position, and these calls are, therefore, probably lighter than usual. The current export season has made a highly promising beginning, high values ruling for our staple products, especially wool, and the season generally is favourable to production. This is beginning to bring in a good flow of money to the country, and our imports continue on a moderate scale, so the balance of trade remains well in our favour, and it appears likely that it will be so for some little time to come. We do not wish to preach caution unnecessarily, but in view of the present disturbed state of the whole world, we consider that a reasonable amount of caution and economy should be exercised by all, not merely from a local view of the position, but as part of the great Empire which is now engaged in the greatest struggle in the world’s history, and one in which the whole of the Empire’s resources count and are needed.”
