The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, December 21, 1915. WITHDRAWAL FROM GALLIPOLI.
Word has come through that the whole of the troops, stores, munitions, etc., have been transferred from Auzac and Suvla, with few casualties. It is terrible to think that such sacrifices were made at the Dardanelles without achieving the object aimed at. The heroic landing of our troops and all associated with the banging-on process will go down to history as one of the greatest feats of arms ever attempted in warfare. One cannot help feeling a pang of grief and disappointment at the withdrawal from that dearly-won narrow strip on far-off Gallipoli. History will tell us whether the whole assault was a grand mistake or not. Be that as it may, its soil will for ever be sacred to Australians and New Zealanders, We will not labour the point. The troops have been withdrawn to fight probably elsewhere in the Near East, and they can rest assured will never be called upon to face such a task as the landing at Gallipoli again.
