By 32 votes to 18 the members o( the " South Canterbury Jockey Club, at a specially convened meeting, decided to recommend the Racing Conference to reduce the days of racing, A limitation to statutory holidays was suggested. Out of a total of 35 pupils of the Terrace End School who sat tor proficiency certificates, 34 suceeded and one obtained a competency. This is a record for the Wanganui district this year. The (jueen of the South sailed at 3.45 o’clock yesterday afternoon hemp laden for Wellington. She is due back on Saturday morning with general, and after discharging will load hemp for Wellington, and sail on Saturday night. Mr A. H. Two ex-bandmasters of this town, Messrs Betty and Golder, have been asked to assist a Hawke’s Bay Band, in the band contest in connection with the grand “ Mardi Gras ” Carnival to be held in Napier on the 28th. Mr Betty is to play the leading baritone, and Mr Golder the leading soprano.

The Tahiti which is due in Wellington about the 27th instant, is bringing about 150 sick and wounded soldiers. The list contains the following whose next-of-kin resides in this district: John M. Rough, son of Mr G. Rough of Foxton and C. J. Maroni, brother of Miss M. Maroni of Foxton.

Mr Boyes has disposed of his dental practice to Mr Ingle, of Taranaki, who will take possession as from January Ist, Mr Boyes, who has been actively connected with military affairs since his residence in Foxton has offered his professional services to the military authorities. All members of the Foxton Tadies’ Patriotic Guild are requested to attend the meeting to be held to-morrow afternoon. There will not be any further guild meetings after to-morrow until Friday, January 7th, but there is plenty of work to be given out for those who desire it in the meantime.

The marriage took place at All Saints’ Church on Tuesday of Mr Joseph Frederick Langdon, son of Mrs C. Dawson, of Foxton, and Miss Alice Maud Prew, daughter of Mr W. Prew, of Poxton. The bride was attended by Miss Langdon, sister of the bridegroom, and Trooper W. J. Clarke, of Trentham, officiated as best man. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. W. Raine. The bridegroom was a member of the Main body of New Zealand’s Expeditionary Force, and was recently invalided home suffering from two bullet wounds.

At Monday night’s Council meeting a circular letter was received from the Petone Borough Council covering a resolution passed by that body relative to Soldiers’ .Pensions, and asking that the Foxton Council pass a similar resolution. —It was decided on the motion of Cr Whibley, seconded by Cr McColl, that as an aid to recruiting the Government be requested to amend the War Pensions Act, 1915, setting forth therein clearly and definitely the amounts payable to the soldiers’ dependants in the event •of death on active service, such amounts not to be subject to reduction or variation by the Pensions Board set up under the Act, and in view of the dissatisfaction which generally prevails regarding this matter, urges that Parliament be at once summoned to amend the Act; and that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Prime Minister, the Minister tor Pensions and the Member for the District.
