CORRESPONDENCE.
(To the Editor.) Sir. —I was under the impression that anything which is calculated to beautify the town should be encouraged by the Borough Council, always provided that a nuisance was not created. But a thing of beauty is surely not a nuisance. You will notice, sir, that the macrocarpa hedge on the fence line in Main Street next the post office has been cut out, leaving an open gap but for the picket fence. It appears, sir, that the hedge encroached a little on the footway and notice was given to cut it back, which was done and the pickets painted. The Town Clerk did not approve of the work and ordered the hedge to be cut inside the fence and rather than put up with such officiousness the hedge was cut out with the result that it has marred the beauty of the frontage. Will the Town Clerk ask the postmaster to spoil the hedge next door? I think, sir, it is time the Council asked its official to use a little common sense when asking people to comply with the by-laws. Thanking you in anticipation.—l am, etc., In the Know.
