AN INTERESTING FORECAST.

A forecast of events in Ffirrope which was published in Every Saturday on January Sth, 1910, is particularly interesting just now by reason of the fact that the present year was fixed as the period in which there would he a “conflict of giants” as a result of the Kaiser’s ambition to become the master of Europe. “Germany,” reads the article referred to, “is determined not to relax for a single instant her policy of naval expansion. She has just made a semi official statement to this effect, in reply to a rumoured intention of an opposite character which had been circulated in Berlin by a German publicist. It is the ambition of the Kaiser to become virtually master of Europe, as controller of the greatest army of modem times, because the power of Russia has been broken by the events of the RussoJapanese war, and France is not strong enough to cope singlehanded with Germany. When his naval programme is completed William 11. hopes to become an equally dominant power on the high seas, aud so to fulfil one of the dreams of Napoleon Bonaparte, Great Britain only standing in the way, as she did in that of the French Emperor, so that the year 1915 is likely to become as event ful as that of 1815. It will be a conflict of giants, for which Germany will be held solely responsible. All the wishes and interests of Great Britain are pacific, but she will not shrink from the contest which is being forced upon her, feeling that her national existence is at stake, aud that the high aud heroic qualities of the race which has planted its flag in every sea and established Us dominions in every quarter of the globe, will be found competent to preserve the integrity of its world-wide Empire, and to uphold the power and dignity of Its high historic name.”
